SLRV
Phase 1

A Noble Endeavour - Sri Langkasuka
The Sri Langkasuka Retreat Village, a 7-acres land in Bujang Valley, situated next to a forest reserve at the foothill of Mount Jerai, is a beautiful and conducive place for meditation. Watch this video for more information and inspiration of this noble initiative.

A Community. A Village.

It was 20 years ago when both our teachers, Hor Tuck Loon and Chan Lai Fun came across the beautiful teaching and since then we have been benefitting so much from their sharing. Without a doubt, we knew we had to share this beautiful understanding to extend the same wisdom and compassion that many others had been seeking but did not have the opportunity to come close to.

Thousands of minds have since benefited from it and many lives have changed for the better through learning about the nature of their minds. Together we have grown as a community, as a family. With many spread out all over the world, meeting up is a challenge. However, with the internet and Zoom as supportive causes and conditions, the sharing and learning continue in tandem.

Our Vision

The vision and inspiration of a village as a Home for our community, our family, have been on our minds for a while now. Why a village? A village is a settlement of a group of people that resides harmoniously together for a mutual benefit. Similarly, our community is where sharings, discussions and learnings support one another as we walk on this journey together.

Location

We have identified a beautiful piece of land in the locality of Kedah with a rich history of a long and thriving ancient civilization. The instant connection of its ancestral roots and sacred atmosphere felt like a homecoming. There are no coincidences. We are confident that with all the right supportive causes and conditions, this village will be a place where we can gather, dwell and abide in the most purposeful and beneficial way for the highest happiness of all. In that way, we live the teachings and extend it as One.

In this day and age where such a way of life is rare, let us walk the talk and be an example to inspire others of how understanding our minds and growing wisdom is truly the way to transcend suffering and wake up from this illusion. May the love and support of each and every one of you manifest our village easefully and swiftly so that more can benefit from it.

A Restful Mind is unlike any other rests.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is Sri Langkasuka Retreat Village?
It is a forest sanctuary for practitioners to come together and cultivate wisdom in a supportive communal environment in the spirit of the 3 Meditator’s Jobs.

    2. How large is the land and where is it located?
The size of the land is 7 acres, located in the vicinity of Bujang Valley, Kedah, Malaysia.

    3. What is the benefit of a retreat village?
The development of awareness and wisdom is likened to a gradual marathon run and not a 100-meter dash. This long term endeavour requires the support of a community in order to thrive. A live-together environment of a retreat village offers this support to practitioners to cultivate and live the teachings of awareness and wisdom.

    4. How long will it take for this Retreat Village to be ready?
With the authority approval, design and construction timeline, the retreat village is projected to be completed within 4 to 5 years, based on the availability of funds and barring no other hindering causes and conditions.

    5. What is the current progress of the Retreat Village?
We are currently in Phase 2 - planning and construction of the development. The Noble Enablers are putting together the architecture and construction project team to draw up the master plan, submission for approvals and management of construction timeline. Fundraising efforts will continue for the procurement of human resources, various land study related charges, construction materials, administrative and legal fees, project progress updates costs, and more.

  • 1. Will contributions (monetary and in kind) towards the Retreat Village’s development and construction be acknowledged?
Yes, contributions will be acknowledged according to the tiered funding contribution as provided. Monetary contributions will be issued a receipt and names of those who contributed RM2,000 or above will be displayed on a plaque in the Retreat Village. Contributions in kind will be acknowledged depending on the items.

    2. Do the suggested tiered funding contribution for a total development cost of RM15 million for Phase 2 reflect the actual costs?
No, these are symbolic amounts arranged at affordable levels of collaboration. The sum of each level is to meet the overall estimated development fund, as of current prevalent construction costs.

    3. Will there be more phases coming up, after this current Phase 2, where more funding will be required?
It will be more cost effective to build everything according to plans within Phase 2.  However, the projected RM15 million total development cost is only an estimated amount based on current market rates and prices. With the uncertainty of rising costs i.e. diesel, utilities, raw materials, and etc., the Committee is not able to envisage if there will be any variance or costs overrun at this point.  Nevertheless, we are mindful and working towards keeping costs to the minimum.

  • 1. How do I get to the Retreat Village?
The Retreat Village is accessible by car, by air via the Penang International Airport, and Alor Setar’s Sultan Abdul Halim Airport; and by KTM train to Sungai Petani station.

    2. Any prerequisites or age limit to stay in the Retreat Village?
Requirements to stay for long term or short term stay will vary. As long as the main purpose for stay is to cultivate wisdom-based mindfulness, every applicant will be considered. There is no age limit. Those below 18 years old, must be accompanied by a guardian. Applicants must also be in reasonably good health and mobile (not wheelchair-bound), and if on prescribed medication, it must be under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner.

    3. Can international applicants stay at the retreat village?
Yes, retreatants of all nationalities with a valid traveling visa (if required and on their own applications and costs) are welcomed to apply.

    4. Do I need to abide by the Village’s rules and its schedule?
The coming together of retreatants from different cultures, backgrounds and views may pose a challenge to many in living as a community in shared spaces. As a supportive condition for harmony and community well-being, some basic rules and regulations are necessary to encourage everyone to be mindful of the needs of others, and also as part of the practice.

  • 1. What are the rooms like?
Cozy and minimalist, in the form of 2 or 4 bedded dormitories with bathrooms (shower and toilet facilities) on the same floor. Dormitories are separated into male and female and all retreatants are allocated accordingly.

    2. Do you provide Wi-Fi facility?
No Wi-Fi facility provided for retreatants as we encourage a conducive space free from digital distractions.

    3. Is the Retreat Village suitable for solo practitioner, couple or family?Absolutely! Whether you are here on your own, with a partner or family, your cultivation is of your own mind and incorporating it in your daily life by practicing together with others is very supportive.

    4. Is the Retreat Village wheelchair friendly and accessible to those with mobility challenges?
The village is set on hilly terrain. In order to maintain and protect the natural environment, facilities for wheelchair friendly or mobility challenged individuals are not viable in the current planned setup.

    5. Will anyone be staying in the Retreat Village on a long-term basis?
Our teachers intend to spend their self retreats there often, for long periods when conditions permit. The same goes for our community of practitioners and others who wish to cultivate the momentum of practice. Care takers will be engaged to maintain the village on a daily basis and accommodation will be provided to them and their families.

    6. How long is a “long-term stay” permissible?
There is no definite period but it may be for 2 weeks and longer. Each retreatant’s stay will be reviewed every 3 months or when deemed appropriate by the Committee, to ensure there is continued interest to practice and the village rules are observed at all times. This is commonly practiced in other established retreat centres in Malaysia.

    7. Is there a fee charged to stay at the Retreat Village?
No, there is no fee charged. We offer the opportunity to everyone interested to cultivate wisdom-based mindfulness. Contributions are welcomed to help sustain and maintain the Retreat Village as we encourage the cultivation of generosity in gifting forward. You  may contribute what feels right for you and the listing of the Retreat Village monthly expenses will be made available on the premises.

    8. Will I need to do housekeeping during the retreat?
Yes, housekeeping duties will be shared among retreatants. Each will be assigned, based on their physical level of fitness and mobility, on a roster to ease coordination as part of their practice and cultivation of wisdom-based mindfulness in daily living.

    9. Are laundry services or facilities available?
There are no laundry services available. Laundry facilities available are washing machine, washing detergent, cloth hangers and clips with dedicated laundry drying areas. As the village is set within a tropical forest with a natural damp environment, clothes may take longer time to dry. We recommend bringing comfortable quick-dry clothings for faster drying in well-ventilated areas.

  • 1. Are meals provided? If not, are we allowed to cook?
Meals are not provided. We encourage cooking and eating together to make the most of our shared kitchen and also as an opportunity to foster the sense of a community.

    2. Can I bring my own food and beverages?
Yes, long-term retreatants may bring their own non-perishable pork-free food and non-alcoholic beverages. They must be stored in the dining hall at the designated area. No food and drinks are allowed in the dormitories and multipurpose hall as they may attract ants, bugs and other insects.

    3. Can I arrange for food and drink delivery to the Retreat Village?
Yes, for coordinated group retreats and on an individual needs basis, retreatants may arrange for delivery of pork-free food and non-alcoholic drink at their own expense.

  • 1. How do I apply for a stay?
Information will be made available on our website once the Retreat Village is ready for stay. Spaces are limited and subject to availability.

    2. Is there a minimum stay?
No. We welcome everyone to make full use of the facilities and opportunity to practice. Longer stays are encouraged for consistency of cultivation and may be prioritized during processing of applications.

    3. Can I use my mobile phone or other digital devices during the retreat?
All retreatants are required to hand in their mobile phones and digital devices upon check-in for safekeeping. Contact number to reach you in case of any emergency will be provided once your application is accepted. This, however, is optional for long term retreatants, as the use of mobile phone and digital devices is incorporated as part of the practice in cultivating wisdom-based mindfulness in daily living.

    4. What should I pack?
The basics of comfortable clothes suitable for warm and damp weather, a refillable water bottle, environmentally friendly sunscreen, a light jacket or shawl and socks. A complete recommended packing list will be provided upon successful confirmation of application to stay.

A Resplendent Noble Giving

Giving is an understanding, as there is the awareness that the receiving end is benefiting from it.
To give for the sake of alleviating another’s suffering is noble. Would you be willing to give if the receiving end is striving towards the noble goal of ending the root of suffering that is found within the mind? Would you give whole-heartedly wishing that he or she will achieve the goal that is hard to come by? Would you then give with absolute joy that there are still such 'noblers' who wish to walk such a difficult Path that many wise ones have trodden and finally found Total Freedom?

We are offering you the gift of giving. The gift of supporting a retreat village for those who wish to enter the noble strive. Your support entails freedom from suffering. It is A Noble Giving indeed.

Your loving contributions will make this vision come true.
